The cold has returned and tends to slow things down but not inside the walls of RLCC Elementary. January has been a busy month and February will prove to be the same. A reminder to make sure that your student is prepared for the elements when they leave the house in the morning.
On January 7th we had Climb Theatre Productions join us for two shows, one each for K-2 and 3-6. Climb’s theme was “self-control” and it is a good fit with our Character curriculum that the students see on the wall everyday in the cafeteria. Our STAR team puts on small skits that coincide with the monthly themes. We are grateful that we have the opportunity to have Climb Theatre come on an annual basis. Thank you to Mrs. Margo Peterson for her efforts in coordinating this event and for her work with the STAR team
Holly Vettleson emerged as our local winner of the school-wide Spelling Bee also on January 16. It was a hotly contested bee, and a battle back and forth between Holly and 1st runner-up Kjersten Walton. Holly came out on top by spelling rotisserie correct. Kelsie Sirjord was 2nd runner-up. Congratulations to all three students! Holly will go on to compete at the Regional Bee in Thief River Falls at Northland Community and Technical College on Friday, February 26.
December students-of-the-month were awarded in early January. For grades 3 and 4, Matthew Vettleson, grade 4, son of Al and Chris Vettleson of Oklee was awarded and for grades 5 and 6, Brandon Lee, son of Jack and Tracey Lee of Oklee was awarded. The students are first nominated by the teachers, with anywhere between 5 and 6 students at each grade band nominated. The students are then ranked by the teachers in 4 categories: Academics, Effort, Attitude, and Citizenship. The rigor is quite high and we congratulate these students for standing up and standing out.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 22 and (note change of date) Thursday February 25. For grades 3-6, we ask that if possible, last names starting with A-M come on the 22nd and last names starting with N-Z come on the 25th. K-2 is scheduled and if you have multiple students in the building, we certainly don’t ask that you come on two evenings. Of course, the book fair will be in full swing also at this time (and all week)
In addition, we are asking parents who have not registered with Instant Alert, our emergency messaging system, to stop by the office and visit with Judy for instructions on how to get on board, or to make changes. All can be done from home.
Our Elementary basketball and wrestling programs are in full swing, and with success. The basketball teams have numerous wins and their tournaments, and the wrestlers will soon be competing. Thanks to Mitch Bernstein, Shawn Hince, Connie Bishop, and Mallory Gerardy in basketball, and Charles and Wes Magnell in wrestling, for taking the time to spend with our young student athletes.
We are 2 months away from MCA-II testing. Continue to check in on your student, encourage them and assist them when needed, and please make it to conferences to visit with their teachers. We are on the stretch run and April will be here before we know it!
Mr. Pederson
